Sirius Black and Severus Snape Argue at Grimmauld Place

On the last night of winter break, Severus Snape arrives at Grimmauld Place, headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. Mrs. Weasley tells Harry to go to the kitchen where he finds Snape and his godfather, Sirius Black, sitting in awkward silence because they are old rivals from school days. There is a letter on the table from Dumbledore explaining that Harry is going to have Occlumency Lessons with Snape as soon as he returns to Hogwarts for the spring term. Snape tells Harry to sit down, and Sirius accuses him of ordering Harry around, and threatens to settle things if Snape used the lessons to give Harry a “hard time.” An argument ensues in which they each make barbed comments, Snape about Sirius being a convict and hiding at Grimmauld Place with nothing to do for the Order, and Sirius questioning whether Dumbledore should trust “Snivellus” since he is an ex-Death Eater. They draw their wands and Harry gets in between them to stop a possible duel, just as the Weasley family and Hermione enter the room with Arthur Weasley, who has returned from the hospital. With everyone staring, Snape turns to leave after telling Harry to meet him in his office for Occlumency Lessons, which he should call “Remedial Potions” to hide the true purpose.
