The earliest known full description of the game appears in 1398, in a book by Zacharias Mumps. The game he describes already closely resembled modern Quidditch (QA5, QA6).

Notes
Mumps also emphasises the need to play matches away from the notice of Muggles and states "Choose areas of deserted moorland far from Muggle habitations and make sure that you cannot be seen once you take off on your brooms" (QA5). From later legislation that was enacted it is apparent that this advice was not followed.
