The Four Champions

- Chapter 17

"I didn't put my name in that Goblet!"
-- Harry Potter

GF17: The Four Champions

The Triwizard Tournament judges try to decide how Harry was selected, argue and finally accept the fact. Few believe that Harry did not enter his own name; Ron is not one of the few.

Calendar and Dates

This chapter takes place immediately after the previous one - the evening of 31 October 1994.

Interesting facts and notes

The shock and consternation of the teachers, tournament judges and competitors at Harry being chosen as an "extra" champion is very evident. It doesn't matter that Harry keeps protesting his innocence. While the other Gryffindors throw a party for their champion, Harry discovers his best friend Ron isn't happy about the situation - and they argue.

He was wearing a steely smile, and his blue eyes were like chips of ice.

An additional bit of description for Karkaroff.

Madame Maxime, whose enormous hand with its many superb opals was resting on Fleur's shoulder.

Another mention of opals, this time not in a context suggesting Dark Magic.

Harry didn’t know how to explain what had just happened. He just stood there, looking at the three champions. It struck him how very tall all of them were.

Very tall, and with several more years of magical education more than Harry has had. However, they have probably not faced as many challenges as he has in his first three years at school.

Instead of going up the marble staircase, Cedric headed for a door to its right. Harry stood listening to him going down the stone steps beyond it, then, slowly, started to climb the marble ones.

Hufflepuff's common room is therefore below the ground floor. The Hufflepuff mascot is a badger, a burrowing animal, so it is appropriate that their house is located by going down rather than up.

Exceptional character moments

The Fat Lady, who likes to gossip with her best friend Violet.

Mad-Eye Moody (Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise) giving a detailed account of how he got Harry's name to be selected by the Goblet of Fire - and managing to do it without being seriously suspected of being the culprit himself.

Harry's bewilderment at his name coming out of the Goblet of Fire and his anger at being called a "little boy".

Professor Snape's obvious hatred of Harry coming through - but becoming quiet when the Headmaster stops him.

Professor McGonagall jumping to Dumbledore's defence when he is accused of making a mistake.

Memorable lines

"Madame Maxime! Zey are saying zat zis little boy is to compete also!" [Fleur Delacour]

"Don't go blaming Dumbledore for Potter's determination to break rules. He has been crossing lines ever since he arrived here –" [Severus Snape]

"Dumbly-dorr must 'ave made a mistake wiz ze line...." [Madame Maxime]

"Well, Barty knows the rulebook back to front...." [Ludo Bagman]
