Sleeping Draught/Potion

Sleeping draughts, or sleeping potions, cause the drinker to fall into a deep sleep.

Ingredients

Flobberworm Mucus
Lavender
Valerian Sprigs
Standard ingredient (Pm)

Preparation

Step one

  • Add 4 sprigs of Lavender to your mortar.
  • Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to your mortar.
  • Crush into a creamy paste using your pestle.
  • Add 2 blobs of Flobberworm Mucus to your cauldron.
  • Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to your cauldron.
  • Gently heat for 30 seconds.
  • Add 3 measures of your crushed mixture to your cauldron.
  • Wave your wand.
  • Leave to brew and return in 20-30 minutes.

Step two

  • Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to your cauldron.
  • Heat on a high temperature for 1 minute.
  • Add 4 Valerian Sprigs to your cauldron.
  • Stir 7 times, clockwise.
  • Wave your wand to complete the potion.

Brew times

  • Pewter Cauldron: 30 minutes.
  • Brass Cauldron: 25 minutes.
  • Copper Cauldron: 20 minutes.

References from the canon

  • Hermione filled two chocolate cakes with Sleeping Draught, and Harry and Ron used them to knock out Crabbe and Goyle (CS12)
  • A Sleeping Potion is a purple potion which Harry drank after his ordeal with Voldemort in the third task. He didn't drink it all, so he was still awake when Dumbledore was arguing with Fudge (GF36).
  • The dragons for the first task were given Sleeping Draughts to knock them out for transport to Hogwarts (GF19).
