Fireplaces and hearths

Hogwarts has many fireplaces used for heat, light and communication – See Hogwarts Fires

Fireplaces appear to be the main source of heat for the castle: “While the Gryffindor common room and the Great Hall had roaring fires, the draughty corridors had become icy and a bitter wind rattled the windows in the classrooms” (PS12).

Many wizarding houses have fireplaces in order to travel using the Floo Network: “Well, there are an awful lot of wizard fires to choose from, you know…” (CS4).
