“Undetectable Extension Charm ...Tricky, but I think I’ve done it okay; anyway, I managed to fit everything we need in here.”
-- Hermione (DH9)
“Snape could send Phineas Nigellus to look inside this house for him. ...But let him try now, all Phineas Nigellus will be able to see is the inside of my handbag.”
-- Hermione (DH12)
Hermione had a small, magical, purple beaded bag prepared for the Horcrux hunt that carried everything she thought they would need, from books and clothes to a tent and even the portrait of Phineas Nigellus which had hung in number 12, Grimmauld Place.
The small hand bag had an Undetectable Extension Charm placed on it that made it so big inside it "echoed like a cargo hold" and expanded to contain everything (DH9, DH12)
Other objects stowed inside the beaded handbag included:
- Various books (stacked by subject)
- Books about Horcruxes from Dumbledore's office
- Tales of Beedle the Bard
- Spellman’s Syllabary
- History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
- Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts
- Break with the Banshee by Gilderoy Lockhart
- Secrets of the Darkest Art
- Monster Book of Monsters
- Hogwarts, A History
- Muggle money from Hermione's Building Society savings
- Ron and Harry's clothing, including jeans, a sweatshirt, maroon socks, wooly jumpers (sweaters), and shoes
- Harry's rucksack containing the photo album of his parents made by Hagrid
- extendable ears
- a tent
- the Cloak of Invisibility
- a bottle of essence of dittany
- Polyjuice Potion

- Slytherin's vanquished Horcrux Locket
Commentary
Notes
An "Extension Charm" is necessary to alter the inside measurements of Wizard tents, the use of which is strictly controlled by the Ministry of Magic. Therefore, when Hermione is using her handbag to carry the tent and its contents, she is breaking the law (Pm).
This is reminiscent Mary Poppins's bag.
