The Lexicon

Terms of Use

The Harry Potter Lexicon is provided free of charge as a reference resource for Harry Potter fans. The contents of the Lexicon are copyrighted to the Lexicon, to the individual authors in the case of essays, and to individual artists. By accessing the site you agree to the following terms:

What you can do:

  • explore the Harry Potter canon
  • research your fan projects, podcasts, fanfiction, and essays
  • leave comments and send feedback (any comments and feedback become the property of the Lexicon)
  • support the site to keep it running and available with minimal or no advertising

What you must do:

  • list the Lexicon as a source if you use the site as a reference, including a link back to the site or the entry in the site
  • credit artists and authors if you use material according to Fair Use guidelines
  • ask permission if you would like to use material outside of Fair Use guidelines and respect our decision if we say no

What you cannot do:

  • copy text or artwork from the Lexicon verbatim except as allowed by Fair Use guidelines
  • intentionally damage the site or its content
  • republish the site or any portion of the site in any form, including electronic or print

This all boils down to respect. The editors of the Lexicon work very hard to make sure that the site follows all copyright laws carefully, not just for legal reasons but also out of respect for J.K. Rowling, her material, and the other stakeholders. We expect the same respect from fans, who have shown over the nearly twenty years that this fandom has existed that they are exemplary, creative, respectful, talented, and just really great people. We are delighted to bring this resource to you. Thank you for your support.
